Carol is a Practice Manager at a dental surgery in Rugby, Warwickshire.
My name is Carol. I am 45 years old and my life is fantastic! I work in a dental
surgery which I enjoy very much; in fact, I love my work.
I go dancing on a regular basis, enjoy walking, (especially around the shops)
and have a very full social life. Although I am not a “sporty” person I enjoy
swimming and keep fit and lead a very full and active life.
You may think OK but that’s nothing special. I suppose it’s not really
but just over three years ago I was dragging myself around my home on two
sticks, getting up stairs on my hands and knees, and only able to leave the
house with assistance - and worst of all, having to be pushed around the shops
in a wheelchair! The biggest proportion of my diet was tablets and painkillers,
lots of them. They helped, but I lived in extreme and constant pain and looked
far older than my years as a direct result of this.
For five years I had been unable to work and dancing and exercise was definitely
a far and distant memory. I looked and felt like an old lady
and this affected me physically and emotionally. Life was
tiring, painful and unfulfilling.
I had problems with my hip joints and this was the cause of
my infirmity. All the mobility and pain was coming from my
hips, causing problems with my knees, ankles and back. At
times I would just sit and cry because the pain was so
unbearable.
Thank goodness there was a light at the end of the tunnel;
Hip Resurfacing - a way to hopefully improve my mobility and
quality of life.
I had my first operation three years ago, followed three
months later by the second and I have never looked back
since.
After the initial post operative pain following the first
hip, things improved greatly. By the time I left hospital I
was walking much better, using only one stick and in
somewhat less pain. Within a few weeks I was able to go out
with just the stick and I never had to use the wheelchair
again. The second operation completed the transformation.
Within a few weeks of the surgery I was able to walk totally
unaided and free of pain. My recovery progressed and within
six months of the second operation I was able to go back to
full time employment and enjoy my life with no restrictions
through pain or lack of mobility.
That was two years ago. Since then things have just got
better and better. I have no problems with my hips. No pain
and no restrictions physically. My life couldn’t be better.
